Jennifer’s Edibles Feeding The Community (JEFTC) is a not for profit organization that is also the sister corporation of Jennifer’s Edibles Incorporated. Jennifer’s Edibles Inc. is a soul food restaurant located at 1623 Simpson St. in Evanston IL and is owned by Jennifer Eason, a born and raised Evanstonian.
JEFTC is the brainchild of Jennifer and her brother William Eason. In March of 2020, the State of Illinois shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result of this action the City of Evanston went into a shelter in place mode to tame the virus and prevent as many deaths as possible. The problem arose that many senior services were shut down as well. Our seniors, the most vulnerable population, were told to stay home with greatly reduced services or no services at all.
Jennifer and William started off modestly pledging to provide dinner to five seniors per day at no cost to said seniors. This never happened because the first day we fed 17. Jennifer has a problem saying no and considers her cooking a ministry in and of itself. The number of meals grew exponentially, as did the donations. We partnered with the Evanston Community Foundation and we were feeding 210 seniors per day. As of today October 14, 2020, we have served thirty-one thousand, two hundred and fifty senior meals.
This would not have been possible without the Evanston Community Foundation, individual donations, AND the volunteers. Chief among the volunteers is Diane Goldring. Each one of the senior meals was delivered to our seniors all over Evanston. Diane took over our 100% VOLUNTEER delivery operation. She coordinated our over 175 volunteers that have driven meals to seniors, helped prep food, and did shopping for us early on so we could cook. At our peak, as many as 17 drivers per day delivered meals to every corner of Evanston. This was a truly community endeavor.
Since this humble beginning we are currently feeding 70 seniors per day and opened the restaurant back up to the public. We started JEFTC to continue to feed our seniors as well as partnering with Connections For The Homeless to provide as many as one thousand homeless meals per month to our homeless population.
JEFTC is here to stay. As long as folks are hungry, just as Jennifer believes this is a ministry, we consider it a blessing and we are honored to feed them.
We are very proud to have been awarded the Business Community Service Award for Exemplary Service During Covid 19. We hope to continue doing our best to support our community in Evanston. We thank the Evanston/North Shore Branch of the NAACP for this recognition.
